The Salars claim to be descendents of Turkic inhabitants in Transoxiana. The language of theirs is classify within the Oghuz family like Turkmen, Azeri and Azerbaijan. However unlike most Turkic languages they have very weak vowel harmony.
The story of their origin is two brothers follow a white camel from Transoxiana to modern day Qinghai in China. The reason why they left vary from people to people..some claim they was escaping the Mongol invasion (the migration is estimated to happen in the 13th century), to escape corrupt rule of Khwarezm rulers, etc.
But most anthropolgist and scientist believe that most Salars is actually of Tibetan stock but adopt a Turkic language from whatever migrant that came in. They did adopt some aspect of Tibetan culture and language, but is predominantly Turkic.
I will post some pics later, but I've met this Salar girl once. Rather attractive. The Salars is one of the most devout Muslims in China.
Here is some samples Salar folk tales I find.. will post both in Salar and English translation. (format is base on IPA romanization but since there is not enough alphabet on keyboard, I will try my best)

Long ago in Boylir village of Suji there was a strong man and his name was Boylir Boko. Boylir Boko was very strong, carrying a load of 2 - 3 thousand omen, he could alk five to six aghaxili down a road. If he hit a stone with his fist, he could make a dent in it. It is said no matter how many people came to compete, they were no match; talking about his wealth, he was a well known wealthy man in the Salar areas. Gold and silver filled his boxes.
Here is one from their Koran

(to the Turkish speakers, just wonderng how much you could understand Salar with out reading the english translation)

Interesting
But weird thing is that I could hardly understand anything from the Salar text. Maybe your transcription method is different from what I thought? For example, what does 'x' stand for? 'Kh' or 'sh'?

X is the "sh" sound or "þ" in Turkish alphabet.
I think Q is either "kh" or ch, "ç" in Turkish alphabet. Probably the last one, but not too sure.
w/o reading translation I could pick up basic stuff like Altun. I'm not sure but I think Boko is their equivelent to Batyr.
some pics like I promised
Housing style, square shaped with court yard in center.. strong Han influence in architecture, engraving on the wood is similar to Huis, and there is a white stone kept at corners like Tibetans

costume of females, clothing seem light. Hair is covered but not as heavy as say females in Afghanistan or areas in middle east

Male costume is simple, usually white shirt and a white skull cap like Hui

you can find many who still sport a full beard

next will post their history of fighting. The stereotype of the Salars was that they were very very fierce and was in constant rebellion with the Manchu Qing Dynasty. During PRC era, many tend to go for military career.
