Horse riders were very rare in russian army during that time. It was due that russians were bad horse riders and horses was not trained for combat and they were rare only for boyars. There fore they prefered infantry and they felt better to fight on foot. For cavalary were hired nomads such as Kimaks, Tatars, Kamans and Polovcy. Horsemens on picture looks more like europian horse riders. I may be wrong and will be happy to accept any corrections.

Its not a helmet but a hat. A boyar hat. From approximately 6th century nomad fashion of clothe spread wide to west. It mostly was adopted by a nobels and merchants. It became so widespread that Pope in the 10th century wrote a bulet(LAW) that restricted this fashion in the west. It was trouble make for church and the Pope to start the crusade againts the rest of the world and spead the word of Christ. And anyways church had their own fasion of clothers so they wanted that stuff out from the God blessed Christian world. I am sorry! I am a bit sarcastic. But the non-roman church nation didn't give a dam about it. Because the fasion was good and it was for the body not for soul. Your body feel good, head warm and feet comfortable. More over after the restriction of nomadic fasion in europe, fever and cold became the main enemy of the people. Feet were always cold, head open and clothes not with a bad tast.

Sorry! I miss understand you. You have a sharp eye.
Yes its strange. I think the helmet on the picture is wrong. Russian worriors had a spike on the helmet. Face open so the enemy would see the brave son of his nation who has no fear before the enemy. Russian soldeirs was something exotic at that times. their favorite hunt was hunting down wolfs with only clubs and killing bear with a spear. Russian Emperor Alexander and Bismark togerther hunted on bear with spear and no other weapons. While Bismark was an embassetor in Russia.
One more thing! Iron was very rare in Russia. And armor was not well welcomed by commons. Only during the Emperor Peter 1 the mining work took place in Russia. Weapons were exported from Krym.

LOL now that's a funny painting ;D The Slavs were primitive marsh-dwellers in the Pripet when the Scythians were living in the Caspian-Ukrainian Steppes.
