A Chinese guy I know told me there was an interesting period of time called ÎåºúÂÒ»ª in Chinese history when steppe people invaded China in great numbers and eventually went back to steppe or blended into Chinese society. I copied these chinese characters from his email but have no idea what them mean. Could you tell us more about this part of history since you know Chinese?

I was told there was massive ethnic cleansing during that period of time between central asian nomads and han people in China. The Hu was originally a referring of Xiongnu, who was in fact the most powerful non-Chinese ethnic group neighboring the Chinese Han Dynasty therefore the Han simply referred to them as the Hu, a diplomatic message in Han Shu defined Hu as the proud son of heaven (天之驕子) (Chapter 94). The Hu later became the collective term for non-Chinese ethnic groups or the barbarians.

Greathun, during that period of China, various Turkic and Mongolic peoples established several dynasties in Northern China and ruled the region. You can find more info at the link given by Hjernespiser. That is not true, the name Hu 胡 was used during the Pre-Han 漢 period for all the northern nomadic neighbors of China; that included the Huns, but not all Hu were Hunnic, there were other nomads too.
