Hey, nice thread and great photos BK, thanks for posting
Yes, the greatest city on the Silk Road was Chang'an during the early medieval times, but I don't know which city was the greatest after the fall of the Tang Dynasty.
A note: The Samarkand of today is the one built during the 13th-14th centuries, after Chinggis Khaan destroyed the old city.

Is it true that Tâjik is still the primary language of Samarkand? I heard this from many Uzbeks and Iranians
And Xi'an is ancient Chang'an, though Chang'an was larger than modern Xi'an.

WHAT are you talking about , , the style of art is called islamic art and it is not Iranian , I haven't heard of any Iranian style, , thats redilcus , it is called islamic style whihc is a mix and has many subgroups and have been develpoed under different epoch, the pic that I have shown are called from the timurid Islamic art and late 17-18 centry central asian art
I think we need more information at a high level before we can decide that, the Tajik authorities are claiming that Samarkand, Bukhara, panjikent and some more cities of uzbekistan belonging to the "eternal tajik land" of the "aryans, and so on". But one thing is for sure that the population in some major cities in Uzbekistan are bilingual in (uzbek and tajik).
The bilingualism in some major cities in Uzbekistan have been used for political purpose.
Many reason have been given. Thought that the turks in medieval times had been mixing with the population of the cities. According to the medieval sources there where mixing with the soghdianians and not with the tajik (dari-speaking people)
this subject is to big to write at this moment but if you have arguments and question I would try to reply them.
But as I said it is controversial subject. If you have any arguments, please post them
