(Originially posted by me at October 11, 2004)---- Can someone please inform us about the Donghu? When did they appear in written sources? Who were their ancestors? What were the unique parts of their culture? How should we classify them, Tungusic or Proto-Mongolic? Thanks in advance

Not just Mongols but all the "Foreigners" living across the border of Northern China. So this also included Turkic peoples and perhaps even others as well. The ancestors of Mongolic peoples made up the Eastern branch of the Hu.

All foreigners are called "Barbarians" or "Nu"="Slave".

So these Donghu are helped chinese to defeate Zhizhi. After fall of Hun they took power & founded (named themselves?) Sumber(=Syambi/Sienpi -maybe Shambal hahaha..). Mongols are sure that Sumber was their direct ancestors, because word Sumber(=name of a mountain means Highest) & it`s 33 Mongol guardian tribes are very famouse among Halha & Buryat Mongols ( -Buryats say there were 12-13 guardian tribes).(I don`t think Sumbers were Hamnigans(=Zurchins=Manchu) -even they always lived in East.).

After being defeated by Modu Chanyu of the Xiongnu, the Eastern Hu broke into two parts: the Xianbei and the Wuhuan.
AFAIK the Xianbei didn't help the Han in their campaign against the Western Xiongnu.

They predate only the names Turk and Mongol; but they don't predate Turkic and Mongolic peoples.
