Ashina was a part of Turk (Tujue) uruq (Don't know it's English form) which consisted of 12 tribes. Tujue was a part of Xiongnu. So they were Hunnic.

The Türük were a bodun (people), not an uruq (clan) Chinese sources give many examples of how the Tujue were "a branch of the Xiongnu". We do not have direct sources prooving that the Türük Bodun belonged directly to the core Xiongnu people, but we know that the possibility of the ancestors of Türük Bodun being subjects of the Xiongnu exists.
