Hello! I am Hungarian, recently spent a couple of weeks in Mongolia and - incidentally - was pleased to see you like my Flickr pages with ancient textiles from the East in Western places. I felt very much at home in Mongolia, both in the centre and in the far West where we stayed with Kazakh eagle hunters. The Kazakh word for "apple" is alma, as in Hungary - and so many other languages! The Mongolian word for "hero" is baatar, just like the Hungarian bator. I accept that feelings count for little. I felt the same sense of being "at home" in the Basque country. If you go sufficiently far back in time, I suppose we all join up, so we are only arguing about the routes our ancestors took on their migrations - and the degree of cousinage.

What do Basques have to do with Mongols? :-)

Not a lot but we have all evolved from pastoral herders. Hungarians and Basques wear similar sheepskin coats, have similar habits - a penchant for red, white & green, for stringing up red peppers to dry outside their houses. Their origins are both obscure with many theories offered and no consensus either on their roots or their language. Flimsy - but if you visit the Basque museum in Bayonne you'll see what I mean.

I love talking about Hungarians.I feel them so close to the Bulgars though. I have personaly met with Hungarians and they are very nice people. The clothing, armours and weapons of the early Magyars and Bulgars was quite similar. And also both nations dominated the archery. Here is a photo of an Magyar Leader. Attachments:

Interesting map, I had no idea they advanced that far let alone south Italy. Interesting how the pattern is entirely different from the Norse, while also similar, as the ability to attack anywhere, anytime, and disappear just as quickly before serious opposition could be mustered was thanks to the Magyar horse as well as the Viking longboat. BTW... so thats how the Varangians found their way all the way down to Constantinopole. A massive inland river of all things.

Actually, this map is incomplete. Magyars went as far as raiding into the Arab controlled part Spain and at one occasion they even reached the English channel...
Yes, Vikings were penetrating via Dnieper and Volga through the great Russian plain. The map doesn't show that they also went down Volga to Caspian Sea and were raiding the shores of Iran and also were employed as mercenaries in Kwarezm and Baghdad. As the Khazar king wrote about the Vikings "if we wouldn't oppose them they certainly would have burned all the Saracen land down to Baghdad."

Interesting points.I´ve seen some pictures where the Khazars fight with the Vikings and Russians lately. This means that the Khazars were actually in a Bufer zone if i can say so. The Khazar land was situated in a cross between cultures.Eventually they were conquered by the Kiev state.Anyway.I don´t pretend that this map is original.I found it on internet. I knew that the Magyars reached the north part of Spain.Bye.
