(Originially posted by BK at October 18, 2004)---- I was looking at wikipedia and read little about the article. While reading it I was confused , ougththat it has been discussed at the AE earlier I wanted to know of curiosity if the "facts "are true on the wikipedia Look for yourself en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manzikert---------------- (Originially posted by me at October 18, 2004)---- Hmm, there are inaccurasies in the numbers. Even though numbers vary from source to source, the most accepted views say that the Byzantine army had approx. 100,000 troops whereas the Seljûkid army was composed of 45-50,000 men.

ihsan,thanx for opening this topic
I had looked wikipedia before and yes,it is visible that the article was written by a Greek or a little informated historian.I would open a topic about Manzikert(mostly depending on numbers)in Allempires, but you know, there are so many greeks there.
I once read that Byzantines had gathered men from Slavs,Ulakhs,Goths,Franks,Bulgars and lots of tribes such as Pechenegs. So their number of men must have been about 100.000.
Btw,in battle of Manzikert, was the only Turkic tribe Pechenegs or there were more Turks in Byzantine Army?

Yeah, 100,000 would be a good estimate, though figures have gone all the way up to 1,000,000! (Matthew of Edessa) As for the army's composition: It had Russians, Khazars, Alans, Uzes, Cumans, Georgians, Franks, Armenians, Crimean Goths, Bulgars, and Patzinaks. In addition, the elite Tagmata cavalry units and Varangian Guards accompanied Emperor Romanus.

Uzes switcded their sides to Seljuks when they have learned that they also Turk. And Pecheneks, when they learned that they will fight with Turks, they were in in Ýstanbul's Anadolu side. And they drove their horses to Bosphorus and swam to Europe side. They did this with teir horses.

I wonder which source or sources describe this event... I read it only in a modern Turkish book so I doubt that.
