i've finally watched the movie on sunday. it was okay. it didn't stick with Herodot's version perfectly. in fact, she was married with the leader of the Dahae, probably in an attempt to harmonize the versions of Cyrus' death with the account given by Berossus of him dying fighting the Dahae. her husband and son also didn't die in the way described by Herodot, but in Babylon where they went upon the invitation of Cyrus. Cyrus also didn't die on the battlefield but in his tent while observing the course of battle. for some reason, the story is being told as if recorded by al-Farabi (based on ancient Greek texts), even though he wasn't a historian. i assume this is because he's a well known and revered figure in Kazakhstan.
the CGI was bad, but luckily there wasn't much of it, only in the beginning durign a deer hunt (the deer was CGI) and a few times throughout the movie in weird dream sequences (Tomyris had visions of a winged lion made of ash or lava whenever something bad was about to happen). the plot overall still was good enough. the acting was ok, most characters remained bland and uninteresting. it was almost entirely centered on Tomyris and to a lesser degree her family. can't really comment on the costumes, as they were inevitably based on guesswork and conjecture, but it overall worked for me. i think they were close enough, but it bothered me a bit that the cloths were not very colorful at all, despite what the limited evidence of Central Asian and Persian costumes suggest. the best part i guess was the burial of her husband and son, which was based on Scythian kurgan burials, especially of the 'Golden Man' from the Ysyk Kurgan, who is implied to be her husband.

Thanx for your review, I had mostly the same impressions. It would have been better if the costumes were a bit more colorful but the rest were okay.
