Back in 2006, in my first academic article titled "Askerî Târîh Açısından Köl Tigin (Köl Tigin From a Military History Perspective)", I had proposed that the famous Türk (Tujue 突厥/Köktürk) prince and general Köl Tigin might have worn face masks in battle. My inspiration was from the description of a battle between the Chinese and Türks found in the Köl Tigin Inscription, where Köl Tigin is said to have charged into a Chinese line and his body shot by a hundred arrows but none hit his face. Of course there are no archaeological or any other written evidence to support the claim that the Türks wore face masks, but as Temüjin said, further archaeological finds might change that.
