Afghanistan is not steppeland but it's considered as a part of Central Asia and due to various Turkic dynasties that ruled there, it is also sometimes known as Southern Turkestan (along with modern Turkmenistan and some parts of Iranian Khorasan).

Afghans influenced by the Turks of central asia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzkashi Buzkashi is the Afghan national sport, very similar to Turkic horseback games.
