Campaign: Constantinople AD 717–18: The Crucible of History – March 24,2020, Osprey publishing During the bitter winter of 717/18, the besieging Arab army had to send their foraging parties over ever increasing distances to find meager sustenance, leaving them vulnerable to attack as they searched for food. Here mounted Bulgar warriors pounce on an isolated detachment of cold and hungry Arab soldiers with their meagre catch of two small rabbits. art by Graham Turner

This figures helmet, short mail shirt, earrings, bracelet & probably the sword are based on an Alxon-Hunnic Horse-and-Rider Statuette, Late Fifth Century AD, Bactria, Afghanistan. unfortunately David Nicolle deviades from his previous practice of giving the sources for his reconstructions in this book. he doesn't even mention the shield in the description for the plate. only a b/w photograph of the statuette you linked is depicted on page 9.
