...reading about a battle of Saule 1236 in baltic europe, I have any question: are there any relations between mongols and samogitians or other baltic people? the samogitians are describet as riding ponies stronger then the mongol ones? mongols did not conquer any baltic land. are ther any sources why not? in that battle the samogitians did use cannons. did the mongols know about guns in that early time? hope to find a few answers...

Isn't Samogita south of Lithuania and East of Poland? Never thought Samogita was an independent state at that time, always thought it was either under Poland or the Teutonic Order - who were defeated in the 13th century.

There is no any relation accept that two people probably fought each other. Samogitians or Zhemaits are most "Lithuanian" of all the Lithuanian ethnic groups. They are believed to be the last people in Europe to leave paganism (in the 15th century) BTW. I'm not sure, but my guess is that since Zhemaits were considered the most wild, fearsome and warlike tribe of Lithuanians; medieval chronicles would compare to the most dangerous and warlike people of that time i.e. Mongols. Why Mongols didn't reach Lithuania? Well, they already reached two many lands and actually overstratched themselves. Besides, Zhemaitia is the land of forests and marshes-the terrain not really suitable for Mongolian cavalry. And why would Mongols ride to this poor and unknown, remote land anyway? Poland and Russian principalities were much more attractive in terms of booty.
