I'm just getting into this area of history and I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the 720s. I'm interested if there are any resources that mention the towns/ trade centers/oases that existed and were a part of the empire during these years. Particular those that were on the Silk Road. I know they are nomadic, but there must be some areas that stay more constant than others. Can anyone suggest resources that might describe some of these?
Thank you!

Greetings Skyeman, welcome aboard Chinese sources and Old Turkic inscriptions give us some rare information about a few number of towns and forts built and/or inhabited by Turkic peoples in the 7th-8th centuries. If you want, I can make a list of these.

H. Ihsan Erkoc,
Thank you for the welcome.
I would welcome a list if its not too much trouble (and/or the sources you found those in). At first I was really surprised at the lack of information during this time period, but it seems like there are quite a few sources, but just not available in English. I'm studying Chinese and a turkic language, but just not at a point where I can read in them yet. Thank you for your help! It is very much appreciated!

As a start to the initial question, you will find that very few towns were part of any steppe empire. Mostly they were self governing and simply paid tribute to the nomads who had an 'empire' that simply flowed around the town (and its fields etc). Each was mutually dependant on the other, but military power tended to be in the hands of the nomads so they 'ruled' the 'empires'
