Im wondering for a long time now, the meaning of the geographic names of asia, tribe, country and other geographical names are understandable in that high number in other languages too than Hungarian ?
Take this as a game, no official theory in this topic, and Im surely not a linguist, but its not hard to realize how much thing has a meaning in our langauge. Im curious how is it in turkic languages.
Im telling a few example what Im thinking of as the words come to my mind, please dont take its seriously, its just a play with words, most of them probably came from other meaning :
Balkar : (Balkar : left arm)
Karelia : (Karely : outer side)
Alan : (Alant : down side)
Sabar : (Sab is the root for two words in Hungarian, first is Szablya (Sabya) wich is a curved shape sword, the other words is Szabad (Sabad) wich means free people. Ar in the form of Ár means the mass of something, so in this form
it means mass of free people.
Siberia : If Im right up there its original form was Sabaria, wich means land of the free people
Massageta : (Massa) : Massza has the same meaning as Ár, mass of something (not an english loanword) so it might be the tribe of Massa and Goths (if it would be mass of goths it would be written Getamassa)
Asia : Ászia (Land of the Ases)
Hun : as it is written in old sources Hon : homeland
Khanti : Hanti (Hant : grave)
Finn : according to Jordanes its originally Fenn (wich means exactly Up in Hungarian)
China : Kína (Kín : suffer, so it may be land of the suffering)
Türkish : Török (Breaking things)
Greek : Görög (Rolling over)
Bengalia : Bengál (Huge, giant)
Bulgar : if its from Balga + ar its means mass of the ignorants
Szekely : strange but the oldest Hungarian tribe doesnt have a meaning in Hungarian, until we dont put it to its older form : Szakaly (Sakaly)
Sakal : Beard (also a kind of wolf)
Aspis : Old greek sources mentions the tribe of Aspisii (Aspis means evil, tricky in Hungarian)
Arab : A-rab : the slave
Alban : al (down, south) ban : ruler (south rulers)
Ugor, Uar, Ugar : in the form Ugar (empty countryside)
Hispania : Ispan : governor (land of the governors)
Francia : Franc : The d**ned, ill, Francia : land of the d**ned, ill people
Akatzir : Akatz (Akác) is a kind of tree, the word is possibly guards of the forest, pronounce this way : Akatzeur
lets see other geographical names :
Tenger : see (Tengri, tengeri might be a god of the see originally)
Etel : the hungarian name of volga, Étel simply means food
Tigris river : Tigris : Tiger (probably in many other languages)
Kalmykian tribe Eleud : Eleud (Elõd) means ancestor
Kalmykian tribe Koshuth : road of the ram, (Hungarian word Kos:ram, ut:road (Kosh) is the root of the word Kószál (Koosaal) means wandaring without reason.
Kos : greek Island, Kosz (Kos) means dust. Probably has something with Kosher wich means clean, proper
the islands türkish name is Istenköy wich in the form of Istenköz means corner of God in Hungarian.
Ordos : Ordas (huge and evil wolf)
Alma-ata : Alma atya : apple father (probably its a sign of early christianity)
Names of the most ancient tribes and places :
Sumer : in the form Samar (Szamár) : donkey
Sumerian city names
Kish : Kis (little)
Marad : the left behinds
Ur : Ör : Guard
Uruk : Örök : it means the city wich forever existed and will forever exists
Urukag near Tigris river : Örökág (the part of the river wich flows into a larger water, proper meaning : the side wich always there. the word probably base of the word Torok, wich means the same and the following cities in the world are all near a river wich flows into a sea, large lake or to an other river. (Like Terki and Tarku near the Caspian see, Turkku in Finland, Terek in Czechnya.
Terek in Czechnya is near the mountain Magash wich means high in Hungarian. (if you know about the word Magash in any other language let me know)
Der : Dér (morning frost) Der is the northest sumerian city and is in the mountains, so its not impossible.
Kisurra : Kisurran means escaping out from somewhere. The original Sumerian meaning is boundary city
Kutha : Kutya : dog
Borsippa : Borsipa (Small father) (Arabian form is also interesting of Borsippa, its Bors Nimrud. Nimrod is used to be the ancestor of the hunting tribes of Asia.
Kaba stone : Kaba in the form Kába (Kaaba) means sleepy
Old testament of the bible in hebrew : Tanakh - Tanok in Hungarian (teachings)
Once again, these are rough ideas, to explain similarities/same pronounciations. Any other guessing welcome.
