Well he used a lot of diplomacy before he became Chinggis Khan in 1206. Remember how he dealt with Jamukha Gurkhan, Ambakhai Khan (his uncle), Toghoril Ong-Khan of Kereyit, Naimans of Tayang Khan, Merkits and Tatars. His struggles were not by warfare all the time, he also made alliances with some of these and used his rivals against each other. He was the weakest ruler in Mongolia in the beginning, but using diplomacy, he later became the strongest.

In my eyes, he was the first true diplomat and if the other leaders at the were also diplomats then the empire wouldn't have been as large:)

He definitely managed to enforce diplomatic immunity, establishing with it a brand new concept on the Eurasian land mass. One of the most basic "international" norms = sovereigns are held accountable for the safety of foreign missions. Where messengers were arbitrarily executed, such as the case with the mission sent to Khorezm Shah, he made a formal excuse to engage in warfare. Now that's where diplomacy starts.
