As far as I'm informed, the name Turk/Tujue is for the first time mentioned somewhere in the beginning of the VI century, when Chinese administration became aware of Bumin/Tumen and his activity against Toles/Tiele tribes.
I think Orkhon Inscriptions are the oldest writen document mentioning the name Tatar. I'm not sure about Chinese sources on this...

When and where was the name "Tatar" first mentioned? I have no idea When and where was the name "Turk" / "Tujue" first mentioned? It was a record in Weishu regarding the year 542 when the Blue Turks (Tujue) came down to make their ordinary raids on the border. But according to a letter written by a Blue Turk qaghan, the Blue Turk state was founded in the year 532. Is it generally accepted that "Tujue" was mentioned BEFORE "Tatar"? Possible.
