Kyzyl-Kuragino 2014: New findings
Archaeological and geographical expedition of the Russian Geographical Society “Kyzyl-Kuragino” discovered undisturbed ancient burial at the river Idzhim valley, Krasnoyarsk Krai. According to the deputy director of the Institute for the history of material culture of the Russian academy of sciences Natalya Solovieva, findings were made while investigating burial Kuyart-1.
“The kurgan was a circular-shaped stone building about 6 meters in diameter. There was an undisturbed cremation burial under that building. Warrior remains were burned on the side and cremains were then put in the burial”, – said Natalya.
Inventory of the warrior – more than 100 pieces, including unique products of the Middle Ages (X-XII century AD) was found close to the remains: sabre, socketed axe, and quiver full of arrows, knife, metal belt plaques, and complete trappings – stirrups, riding bits, headband plaques, base of an iron plumage.
President of the Russian Geographical Society Sergei Shoigu was informed of the findings. He highly praised work of the archaeologists.
According to the specialists, findings of the burial Kuyart-1 provide absolutely new information on obsequies, convictions and customs of ancient people that inhabited the river Idzhim valley. “The findings are unique because we received large amount of new information from just one little kurgan”, – underlines Solovieva.
Archaeologists assume that the burial refers to the local Turkic speaking population from Usinsk structural basin and note that is has very good state of preservation. After restoration works, findings will be handed over to museums.
