Dear Group: I am interested in hearing comments on the following. Istemi kagan of the Turks @ 550 was said to be a son of a Tsugu T'u-u Mengen (Tuwu Tehaya). He in turn was son of a Mengsun, son of Hsien, son of Ichichni Shihtu, son of Tsugu Mengsun, son of Liu Tsugu. Does anyone know of any references to back this up? Regards: Loren Varga

According to Sui-shu, Tong-dian, Ce-fu Yuan-gui and Wen-xian Tong-kao, the Tu-jue (Gokturks) were descendents of the Xiong-nu (Hunnic) ruler of the region of Ping-liang, Ju-qu Meng-xun. However, Chinese sources give several different origin myths regarding the Gokturks and one of them, recorded in Zhou-shu, Sui-shu, Bei-shi, Tong-dian, Xin Tang-shu, Ce-fu Yuan-gui and Wen-xian Tong-kao, tells us that Tu-men (Bumïn) and She-die-mi/Se-ti-mi (Ishtämi) were the sons of Tu-wu Yabghu, who was the son of A-xian Shad, who was a descendent of Na-dou-liu who lived in the southern Yenisei Basin (modern-day Altai-Khakassia-Tuva).
