There is a tribe called Shahseven in Southern Azerbaijan, around Mughan steppe. They still live in their nomadic traditions. Shahsevens speak a dialect of Azerbaijani Turkish. Youtube video with photos. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2fLmnnSGwM

Southern Azerbaijan you use is not legal and clear Pan - Turkist and non-historical biased name. the use of Southern Azerbaijan is confined to recent years in propaganda media. would you go on and explain about the historical sources citing name of Southern Azerbaijan otherwise you should cease to use it in this historical forum.

Why? As far as I know, the original Azerbaijan, Atropatene of the Antiquity, was located at modern Southern Azerbaijan or Iranian Azerbaijan. Even Iran recognizes that region with the name Azerbaijan, so there is nothing wrong with using that term.

Azerbaijan as a geographical region scretches from Hamadan to Derbent.
South Azerbaijan because it lies to south of Araz river.

Azerbaijan as a geographical region scretches from Hamadan to Derbent. Indeed, this is also how I know. Oh and this was what I was talking about:

No that's not exact term Ihsan, as you correctly mentioned Atropatene or Aturpatekan of Iranian antiquity encompassed much Iranian province of Azerbaijan and some parts of adjacent regions. But the term 'Southern Azerbaijan' Ihsan, I think due to your dislike to the very issue and your full study schedule, you hardly found time to pursue the Azerbaijani republic media recently, the term is used to refer Iranian province of Azerbaijan which was never called in any historical evidence up to now by that name. You may wonder why that is called 'Southern Azerbaijan', by Azerbaijani republic propaganda media. It has only political values for the claims of Pan-Turkist movement there for their claims of annexation of the region, thus the neologism of 'Southern Azerbaijan' could help them in the long run. But now that is a historical forum I think it is notable to say that upon the naming of Azerbaijan on the Azerbaijan republic many -even with no absolute clue on history- were surprised by its name giving. The regions of Adurpatekan, Albania, Shervan and Armenia used to be controlled separately in antiquity but after Arab conquest the region Albania began to be called 'Arran' in Islamic sources and Arab governors of Azarbaijan were nominal governor of northern regions like Arran and Shervan, where pockets of local kingdoms of late antiquity continued to rule until later upheavals, example of which the Arab taking control of the Shervan who later become known as Shervanshahan. Ibn Hoghel says, "Salar Marzban were the last potent ruler of Azarbaijan who had succeeded to stretch his rule over Arran too, but after his death disagreement rose through his family, and his sons stood against each other, as a result of which Shaddadians took the control of Arran and did so over hundred years until Seljuks invaded them and seize it from them too ." So there's no historical backbone for calling Azerbaijan province of Iran 'Southern Azerbaijan' and if sometimes one notices so, the chances are: 1. You watched the Azerbaijani republic propaganda media, 2.Some foreigner confused by the similar name of the both region mistakenly uttered so.
Also thank you Ihsan for the map, it's very comprehensive and it shows the successors of Alexander.
