But the stuff I read about Mongol 2, just makes me very sad. I'm sure there could be plenty of very interesting scripts that he could use to create the sequel. Noooo! The world already thinks we ride into battle with dual swords straight out of a fantasy film! What's next?! Argh!

this is really sad. Why do they do it? With the same expenditure of money and talent, they could have made a trilogy that stuck to real history as far as possible. Of course there has to be some invention if you are going to make a movie, and to a large extent it will show how it could have happened rather than how it did happen (true of any historical movie), but there is no need to distort history with bullnuts. The first film started out well, I thought. But then it got progressively worse, and the last half hour or so was mostly total fiction decorated with distorted history. And the details that they needlessly got wrong probably irritated everyone in this forum who saw it.
Now it appears that the second will be no better and that Bodrov has lost interest in the third (probably just as well).
When it was Hollywood casting John Wayne as the Great Khan, you knew in advance that it would be a travesty--no one involved was at all competent in the history (probably someone read Harold Lamb hastily), and they really didn't care because in those days no one who saw the film would know anything about it either; all they needed to do was sell enough tickets. But now there is a real possibility to make a good movie or set of movies that works as film and is historically reliable. Bodrov could have done it, and he blew it. I haven't seen the Japanese film, but I'm hoping that someone will appear in Mongolia with the talent and the backing to make the movie we want, and, dammit, that we deserve.

Let's wait for the movie though. May be it will be better? I mean there there had many expectations before "Mongol" came out. No we don't expect much from "Mongol 2" may be it will work the opposite way again :-) BTW, recently, I learned that Bodrov's grandmother was Buriat. BTW, I like this trailer more than the actual movie www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMQYh5WRo9k

I don't think he can beat "By the Will of Chingghis Khaan"'s battle scenes, nor has he proven capable of even putting in some important facts into his crazy fictions. Fact is, any movie made about Mongols will be catering for non-Mongols. To do otherwise is to financially ruin yourself.

As I said, I don't like the movie of Bodrov too much because it's very historically incorrect. But he does get a credit for popularization of the Steppe history. Many people saw the movie and got interested in it and understood that the Steppans have interesting history and most importantly they are great human characters and not just some dark, blood thirsty horde.

Indeed Sarmat, I got several friends who caught up interest with Steppe history and culture, especially throat-singing, after they watched "Mongol"

I guess whatever gets people interested is good. The first book I read about the Mongols was really old and inaccurate too, but it was enough to get me started. Eventually they'll read books and find out the truth, then they'll be here asking the same questions about why the movie was so inaccurate
