Hmm but Cherkess isn't the original name of the Adyge, it was given to them by others, though they adopted it's useage for foreigners. Yeah, it's not is their original name. But they use Cherkess as well for themselves and I don't think it's weird that they could called their settlement in foreign lands as "Town of Cherkess." Besides, Turkic was a lingua franca in North Caucasus until the 19th century, so those Circassians who moved to the north in the 15th and 16th century apparently were fluent in Turkic dialects as well and frequently used "Cherkess" as a reference to themselves.

Don Cossacks were Russian speakers. Zaporozhian Cossacks were Ukrainian speakers. There were no Greeks there, so they were either Russian or Ukrainian Orthodox Christians. But there was also a very small percent of Catholics and even a few protestants in the earliest years of Zaporozhian Sich, however, those were expelled or converted to Orthodox Christianity in 1632.

Why did you have to post this "politically correct" version of the letter? It's nice, but it's very remote from the original. The text given in wiki is much closer to the actual letter. Though, it isn't nice at all, but that what they wrote. After all, the Cossacks were rather a bunch of nasty pirates than "polite" diplomates. Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reply_of_the_Zaporozhian_CossacksThou art a turkish imp, the d**ned devil's brother and friend, and a secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight art thou that cannot slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil nutss, and your army eats. Thou a son of a pregnant dog wilt not ever make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, f**k thy mother. Thou art the Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-f**ker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, Armenian pig, Podolian villain, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, a fool before our God, a grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our thingy. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother! So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. Thou wilt not even be herding Christian pigs. Now we shall conclude, for we don't know the date and don't have a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year in the book, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse! Koshovyi Otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host
