USSR didn't conquer Mongolia, though it was the only sponsor of its independence and communist regime.
Mongolia and the USSR were close allies during the whole time of the existence of the latter and any Chinese move against Mongolia would provoke war with the USSR. Needless to say that the Soviet troops were stationed in Mongolia.

My father remember the time! He suddenly was called to move with the army to south borders! Chinese army was 50 km away from Mongol & Soviet army. He remembers : Soviets were keep coming for almost 1 month! Their tanks & machines were like sea. Russains were showing their supremecy! Chinese saw it & pulled back. ;D And when Russians returned home they left tons & tons of oil underground and a lot of machines. The machines they left were equal to what we had in our army! ;D ;D ;D Russian army was so rich!

Soviet, Mongolian forces were originally aligned with the Non-Communist Chinese forces in fighting the Japanese. After WW2, Soviet and Mongolian forces battered the remnants of the Non-Communist Chinese. This then led to a resurgence of Communist Chinese forces led my MZD in the area.
The Soviet, Mongolian in-advertently strengthen MZD and his cronies. Also they were aligned in their ideology and made deals behind the scenes.

Mongolian and Russian relations during that time was very strong, it's really sad that this has changed in modern times. Yet as much as the Soviets supported independent Mongolia, they also deported Kalmyk Mongols in the Caucasus region due to some guerillas killing Russian troops for Nazi Germany. They were a good friend for Mongolians, but not so good friends with Kalmyks. Then again, even Mongolians today are not so good friends with Kalmyks!

yes, russia wanted to protect its influence in east asia, against china and especially japan. russia became a superpower after world war 2, and it had very close military cooperation with mongolia (basically colonialism). after 1960 and the Sino-Soviet split Mongolia sided with Russia and so China could do nothing. but now Chinese are spreading fast into Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and even far-eastern Russia (superb colonial policy).

but now Chinese are spreading fast into Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and even far-eastern Russia (superb colonial policy). Thousands of Chinese also leave these areas seasonally and all the time because of un-desirable conditions. Many don't know what these places are really like before venturing there seasonally. A bit like Melburnians heading to Outback and Western/Northern Australia. A few weeks yeah cool holiday, for long? Neah..

Sometimes Australia feels like a space-vessel orbitting the planet Earth but not really on it. You can point the finger at everyone.
