Black sea or Pontos Axeinos (Euxeinos) a greek pair of words has an Iranian etymology. The word pontos means Sea in Greek but the second word has Avestan origin ; it is axshaēna ( in which a is the negative prefix + xshaēna means "clear, bright) meaning not clear.

Ðüíôïò Åὔîåéíïò means hospitable sea in Greek. "Iranian ethymology" is just an unconfirmed hypo. More over Axeinos and Euxeinos are actually two different words in Greek. Axeinos unlike Euxeinos means inhospitable.
According to the legend the Sea was inhospitable to Greeks when they first entered it and they called it Axeinos (inhospitable) first, but then the name was quickly changed to Euxeinos (hospitable) and that name remained.

It also has to be noted that the consonat "x" in the Greek form has the pronounciation of /x/ as of in Khazar. And it was "axein" before changing into "euxin" which makes it closer to "axshaēna".

In the book by Dr.Bahram Faravashi, Iranvej, University of Tehran publications. he tells of the change in variation of the "x" axein into other languages and later times euxin.Ok I m gonna check the validity of the pronunciation of "x" myself.
