Hmmm i dont know that much about ain jalut myself to be fair so others can help me shed light on this one ;D I think the mongols were outnumbered and outwieghed, the mamluks already had an established force of heavy cavalry and horse archers who could match the mongols for firepower. I think Hulegu had taken all of his heavy cavalry with him on his race to claim the throne. Baybars the nominal commander of the mamluks ( i think he hadn't killed Qutuz yet) was aware of this and so he held his heavy horsemen in reserve. The battle began with a mongol outflanking manouver which they tried to back up with further encircling movements. Baybars took out a steppe tactic from his adversaries and fiented retreat. The outnumbered mongols fell on the Mamluk light horse and started hacking down many whilst shooting many others. The Mongols probably would have won if they had more numbers, but Baybars counterpunched with his heavy cavalry. This was probably too much for the mongols but the fact that Baybars had trapped them probably accounts for why Kitbogha was caught and executed (some sources say he was killed in the melee). The decisive factor here to note was the Mumluk use of heavy cavalry which is something they had later perfected against the crusaders. The Mongols also rode smaller steppe horses which although they are very strong and reliable mounts were probably not as fast or as large as the Arab horses which the Mamluks had more acces to. However that said the mongols had trounced many Arab cavalry units in the past, but that said they were probably more evenly matched in numbers and the mongols would also have had their own heavy horses and armour clad divisions. That is what i know anyway......though i may be wrong so pls can someone else put some flesh on these bones! ;D It would also be interesting for me to ask how horses are trained and if you could have a horse what would you have and why?
