so why can't you accept the same for Kazakhs? err.... again... Sydney Portier is black of African descent... so the chances of him playing a caucasian effectively are simply not in his favor. The skin tone and features of a Kazakh and someone of Mexican descent are a whole lot more similar to the average viewer. Again... it's never going to make everyone happy. There is always going to be the lot that feels that all Kazakh roles need to be played by 100% pure blooded Kazakhs or the film is a waste of time. But to me that seems rather silly... if you compare it to the spaghetti westerns of the mid '60s (as an example anything done by Sergio Leone) - the vast majority were shot in Italy because production costs were so much cheaper - the films however were usually set in the Southwest of the US - so they substituted Italians actors and extras for Mexicans. Yet the films still hold up to the test of time and it's a much vaunted genre of film even though there wasn't usually a Mexican in site. It's not 100% accurate because Italians aren't Mexicans... but the majority of the world was able to suspend disbelief in order to enjoy the film. At the end of the day no one can force anyone to suspend disbelief in order to enjoy a film I suppose. Again I'm curious if anyone has a list of Kazakh actors. Everyone seems to be saying 'Use Kazakh actors!!' but it doesn't seem that many are really all that familiar with who these actors actually are.

Hmm... well then I guess we have to agree to disagree because to try and draw the comparison of Becker or Hernandez playing a Kazakh to that of Sydney Portier playing a caucasian holds about as much water as Swiss cheese. ;D But I suspect this could round in circles to no real point anyhow and we tend to veer off on a tangent. But... if you come up with a list of any specific Mongol/Kazakh/steppes people actors working in film today and where I might be able to source them... I'm all ears.

I notice that in the Russian made "Mongol" film, the recent one, most of the main characters are not Turkic or Mongol. The actor playing Genghis Khan is Japanese, for example. There are some Chinese actors as well.

Speaking about living Kazakh actors. Here is a small nomadic preface part of the Russian fantazy/horror movie by a Kazakh director Timur Bekmambertov "Day Watch" (Dnevnoi dozor). The "Tamerlane's nomades" are played by Kazakh actors. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkJUvGbx-vQ
