It seems it was a very wide spread tradition during the Ancient Times. I wonder if that continued during the Medieval period.
In Turkey, it's only the Alevites who still practice tattoing as a tradition.

Yes, they are called Kızılbaş (Qïzïlbaš, Qyzylbash) by the Sunnis.
That's interesting. Do you have any photos?

No I don't, the tatooes are usually nothing special or elaborate. Most of the time they do the tatooing themselves or have a friend do it and the tatoos condition always worsens within 10yrs. or so. But what they usually get are eagles, wolves, flowers, initials/names, I've seen women with just 2-3 dots on their hand between the thumb and the index finger, I've even once seen a man with what had looked like the Turkic Animal Calender. These tatoos usually aren't too big and are almost always on the forearm or on the back of their hand. I've once seen a Kazak man who went all out, he had eagles and wolves on his chest and stomache. They were bigger than most other tatoos here and looked like they may have been professionally done. They were beautiful, wish I had a camera with me that night.

these tattooing to the opinions of steppe peoples, had special magic functions. if you want to tattoo, be wise what you choose then I don`t know if Mongols had tattoos. But Mongols believe that animal shapes/images/iron forms can protect you from lightning. So if you have wild animal tattoo it will protect you at least from lightning. It is said Lightning never kills a women only men.
