(Originially posted by me at November 10, 2004) ----
Here is a thread where we can talk about Mongolian languages/dialects and ask our questions.
I got two questions to begin with:
1) What is the equivalent of "Wolf" in Mongolian? Shono? Chono? Both?
2) Is there any "K/Q" sound in Mongolian? Or are they replaced with H/KH?
----------------
(Originially posted by Chono at November 22, 2004) ----
1. Depends on the dialect. It can be shinu, shina, shino, chino, chinu, chono etc. Buri might've been also a word for wolf. There's also a common word boohoi for wolf.
2. Sounds h and k do exist in mongolian language, but again depends on the dialect.

Böri was also the Turkic equivalent of wolf.

Well Uyghur comes from Soghdian which comes from Aramaeic which is also the "ancestor" of Arabic (script).

I have a question. In the Secret History there's a place called Botokan Bo'orji(n) near the source of the Onon. I can kind of figure out what most of the place names in the SH mean, but this one has stumped me. Does anyone know what Botokan Bo'orji translates into?

Does Chinggis Kagan's family name come from "Bori- tegin", which means wolfprince in old Turkic?

Chinggis Khaans family name is : HIAD BORJIGIN(or BORJIGON)
This name cames from his ancestor BODONCHIR MUNHAG
I like to think that HIAD BORJIGIN means KHAAN BOR CHONO ;D(=Royal brown wolves) ;D ;D ;D -just my opinion(=+ my family opinion) ;D ;D ;D

But there is t-ch change between Turkic and Mongolian. So the Böritigin could become Börchigin easily. The meaning is also suitable that Chinggis' family is a Tigin (prince) family. I can't see a parallelism between Bodonchir ("Bodu anchar" in some sources) and Borjigin. Also there are claims supporting that Chinggis was the descendant of the Shatos, who were a clan of Tujues. (The chinese envoy Chao- Hong says that in 1221 after visiting the Great Khan.) Klaproth also supports that Chinggis could be 25th descendant of the last Tujue rulers. Also in Secret History, it says that Borte Chono and Goa Maral comes to east after passing the sea (Lake Balkash I think), this legend is the same with the legend of A-shi-nas coming to east leaving the Si-hay (West Sea).

ancient mongolians claimed that they were descended from Kok Chono (Blue Wolf). Seeing a wolf considered luck til this day. Some people keep parts of wolf bones with them all the time to summon luck or hoping to be successful in their carreer.
