"Hohol" is definitely an ethnic nickname, but the offensiveness of it is a matter of dispute. Outside of Ukraine, especially in Russian-speaking countries and communitites, "Hohol" is a common nickname for Ukrainians who don't take it as an insult.

not sure, the "ancient" Cossacks have shaved head and only a lock, the modern Cossacks have no shaved head but still have sort of a lock, if you know what i mean. BTW i also noticed that Russians use it as insult, but Ukriainians don't get insulted by it.

This hair bang is called "chelka" (pronounced "cholka") in Russian. In my experience, it's the other way around. Russians and Russian-speakers use it as a non-derogatory nickname, but Ukrainians in Ukraine take it as an insult. Most of the Ukrainians outside of Ukraine usually don't get insulted by it.

I never heard such a rule among the Turks. Atually, the Turks rarely cut their hair - they just let it grow long ;D

I would be happy if someone would post pictures of both so that we can compare and see if they are similar or not

I could't find any good pictures
but what I ment was that they also shaved the top of the head and the rest was long. Not the manchu style

this is just coincidence, only Samurai did it (as opposed to all Japanese), it was a sign of status. for example Normans also shaved their backheads and they are not connected with the Steppe.

Interesting how Bor Chono's first post here was about hairstyles! xD Erm btw, nomad hairstyles aren't really considered fashionable in modern times at least in Western countries. Also why I have a shaved head but thats it, no style at all. I always wanted something similar to this however: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I-BvceYTbw&feature=related (which wifey forbid -.-)

He says, for modern Turkey, they are familiar with the hair style, but for those who are still traditional, they are still letting his hair grow long. Although Turkey and the country of Arab is so close but their habits are different, if the Arabs used to lengthen are their beards. Attachments:

I had hair that extended down to my lower back about a year ago and used to braid it numerous times -- never occurred to me that I was copying/imitating steppe hairstyles. But now I'm bald
