Khan Ogodei only gave Subedei and Batu 50000 true Mongol warriors and told them "Train the rest yourselves". Subedei trained perhaps 50000-150000 additional men from the steppe tribes, mostly Turks. So the European Campaign was done with 200000 men at most (less, I think personally). Of course the Mongols also used recently conquered people as meat shields or "Hashals" in sieges but they are of no account true warriors. Maybe many of the "Mongol" warriors who died around Kiev were in fact Russian peasants.
