I think it's hard to define the Guifang (Kui-fang) as Proto-Xiongnu, they were a different people. The ancestors of Xiongnu (Hsiung-nu) were the Xianyun (Hsien-yün) and Xunyu (Hsün-yü) whose ancestors were the Hongyi (Hung-yi). The Hongyi, Guifang and some other peoples shared a common ancestor: the Quanyi (Ch'üan-yi).

Dr. Erkin Ekrem's masters thesis was about the Pre-Xiongnu Turkic pepoles, I learned these from there. Unfortunately, it's in Turkish only.

Proto-Hunn tribes are Hun-yui, Xian-yui, Gui-fan, Wei-fan, Jun, North Di, White Di, West Di etc.
