We all know that in every nation there are certain myths, scary stories about some hounted places in which evil spirits dwell. Those places are usualy considered as some kind of taboo, and people avoid them. Such stories and myths are usualy based on fiction and imagination. But... some of them can be based on real events too.
Here is one interesting and true story:
All over Serbia people know a story about Todor's Horses (Todorovi konji; Todor is name of a man) - Todor's Horses are in fact ghosts of 14 horses, which in certain time of the year leave their home at the top of a mountain called Juhor (Yuhor) in Central Serbia. They roam around Serbia, mostly at night, killing people whith their hoofs. They are invisible, and people can only hear their voices and the voices of their hoofs.
When those invisible horses finish their raid, they go back to the top of Mount Juhor.
This story is being told to children for many many generations, and no one knows when did it start. Also no one knows who is that person called Todor.
Now, several years ago, a group of hunters chased a fox near the top of the Juhor. The poor animal managed to escape to its hole near the very top of the mountain (Juhor is a small mountain - 773 m), but hunting dogs have found it, and hunters killed the fox. Hunters had to use shovels to reach the dead fox, and when they reached it, they saw an old piece of metal horse equipment. Soon, archeologists went to the area and started their work. They found remnants of a small ancient Celtic fortified outpost, together whith 14 spears, 14 helmets, 14 saddles, 14 spurs etc. totally 140 objects - 14 of each kind. These Celtic objects belong to the I century BC.
These findings have changed history books, because earlier we belived that Celts in Serbia had inhabited only regions around Belgrade (Lat. Singidunum - Singidun is a Celtic word). Also the amazing thing is that these findins perfectly fit in to a legend that survived up to these days. Only one thing remains mistery - Who is Todor? ;D
Do you have any similar legends among Turkic and Mongolian peoples - legends that became truth?
