I apologise for resurrecting this thread, but I wanted to contribute mine too My favourite ruler would have to be the Byzantine Basileos, Alexios I Komnenos. As for my favourite general, Hannibal Barca. I chose not to make a list, because it would be vast. ~ Panthera

You counted Subotai among the rulers too ;D He wasn't a ruler Considering the fact that I've been staying up all night almost all week, that could have been the reason for my error... I must have been too tired to notice.

So many favourites... ne ways for a non-steppe ruler, I actually quite admire Alexander the Great. Sure the military system of the Macedonian phalanxes surpassed the traditional hoplites in the Hellenistic world (thanks to the sarissa), but I can't really say that was THE key element of the Macedonian success. Alexander was a military leader who won many key victories with rather heroic (yet very strategic and carefully timed) cavalry charges - led by himself. The very funny Persian king at that time, kept running away from him.
I still can't believe he's bi or gay or whatever however. I've also noticed the western LGBT communities have always been trying to pin a LGBT sexuality on famous world figures - almost like an act to get it accepted. There's currently debates on it apparently. Greek, Macedonian and ancient Persian cultures in the past never actually considered homo-or bisexuality a problem - still, watching that movie "Alexander" was a pain with the gay scenes. The battles were nice though, especially Gaugamela!!!

Alexander was a military leader who won many key victories with rather heroic (yet very strategic and carefully timed) cavalry charges - led by himself. The very funny Persian king at that time, kept running away from him. I believe the key element of his success were rather very weak enemies. That's why Macedonians were victorious. But they had serious troubles when they met determined resistance like it was during the siege of Tyrus or in India etc. Also, he couldn't decisevely defeat Sakas. Greek chronists write that Alexander defeated them in 2 battles, but I rather believe that Sakas were actually pretending to be defeated and luring Macedonians deep into their territory to finish them there, Alexander, however, was smart enough in that instance to retreat. Sakas, however, were able to cut down complitely a 2 thousand strong detachment of Macedonians during that campaign. I still can't believe he's bi or gay or whatever however. I've also noticed the western LGBT communities have always been trying to pin a LGBT sexuality on famous world figures - almost like an act to get it accepted. The battles were nice though, especially Gaugamela!!! That movie was terrible. The only fine part was the last battle with elephants. ;D
