In English preferably. I can't seem to find much information about them beyond the fact that the Mongols were originally part of the Shiwei confederacy. Is there more known about them?

Unfortunately the Chinese sources regarding the Shiwei have not been translated into English yet :/

Wolfram Eberhard once gave in his book "Northern Neighbors of China" summary translations of texts regarding Turkic, Mongolic and Tungusic peoples located in Chinese sources, but I'm not sure if the book had been translated to English. I think the book was written in Turkish, but a German translation might be available too.

Yeah. There are little snippets here and there online, but nothing substantial.

That's bad. Someone should translate all these Central Asian-related stuff in the Chinese sources to English. I think we have much more translations of those materials in Turkish.

Shiwei (室韦)was probably a mis-pronunciation of Hsien-Pei (鲜卑) They were considered as Proto-Turkic tribes by some historian
