The etymology dictionary I have (by Tuncer Gülensoy) says this word is related with "yawa" meaning "a warm place", "a narrow, desolate place (like a cave)".
The word have other meaning like bestial, savage, uncivilized, someone from uninhabited place, wilderness.
Turkish also shares the word with Persian.
What I had in mind is this.
I think the word could have been related with "yaya", "yayan" meaning someone on foot (someone not riding a horse).
What do you think? Could Turks have named people not riding horses as foreigners when they made up this word?

The word for "foreigner" are "özgə" in Azerbaijani langauge.
"Yabancı" word in Turkish are rather derived from "yaban" meaning "wild", I don't know if this is a Turkic word or not.

Another thing, in Azeri Turkish we have "Yağı" which means "enemy", is there a similiar word in other Turkic languages (or local Anatolian dialects).

Yaġï (Yağı) was a common Old and Middle Turkic word for "enemy" but in modern Turkish it has fallen from everyday useage.
