which ethnicity did the hsien pi state belong to, are they from the donghu or later xianbei? Xianbei was no single ethnicity, but a confederation of many tribes, it's Altaic (Hunnic, Turkic and Mongolic) made up mostly by Donghu tribes but also absorbed the remanent of (collapsed) Xiongnu Empire

I believe their ruling faction, the Murong, was Mongolic. They're usually considered direct ancestors of the Mongols. But yeah, the other subject tribes were probably a mixed bag, like every other steppe nation.

I believe their ruling faction, the Murong, was Mongolic. They're usually considered direct ancestors of the Mongols. But yeah, the other subject tribes were probably a mixed bag, like every other steppe nation. Murong=Morin means horse in Mongolian, their totem was white horse the ruling faction of Xianbei was Tabgach clan, not Morin clan Tabgach clan was initially a Xiongnu tribe from Ordos

No, the Tabghach were not the ruling clan of the Xianbei, it was just one of the many tribes forming the Xianbei people. And yes they were heavily mixed with the Xiongnu from Ordos.

The Tabgach/Tuoba clan were the ruling faction of the Tuoba branch of the Xianbei, which later founded the Dai and then Northern Wei states based around Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. The Morin/Murong led the Former Yan and Later Yan kingdoms in Liaoning.
