In Europe a lot of people seem to dislike gypsies. I have cousins who dislike them who are from Portugal. The closest thing we have to themn here is Irish travelers. Do any European members knoe the history or reason behind this?

Gipsies keeped their traditions, they live in close communities mostly. One of their traditions is that stealing is not a crime. They are very popolous, a gipsy women can have 6-8, sometimes 10-12 children, and they dont really care that they are unable to give them a normal life. 90% of them is unemployed, at least here in Hungary, many of them havent even finished elementary school. A traditional gipsy family modell looks like a following. The women doesnt work at all, and she became a mother at the age between 14-18, after that her only job is to make children to his man. So its a one man job to give food daily to such a large family, its impossible most times. An other problem is that generally according to studies on this topic is their intelligent quotient is under 90 in average. It made them available to go to special schools only, I dont have to say it doesnt help their effort to get a job either.

Sounds like racialist thinking. There's other studies that show poor nutrition leads to lower IQ.

Some countries have verry low average IQs. This may just come from illiteracy or not going to school I don't think this would effect Gipsy children.

Sounds like racialist thinking. There's other studies that show poor nutrition leads to lower IQ. I am not really sure what kind of reasons may there be behind the low IQ. But unfortunatelly what massaget said is right. Traditional Gypsy culture prohibits their children to go to the school and what is even worse stealing from and cheating of non-Gypsies in encouraged.

Recent genetic studies proves that genetics can modify from generation to generation much more than we thaught before. For example if someone lives among good circumstances has a better chance that their children will be healthy genetically than those who spent their life with suffering. In the topic of gipsies its understandable if they spend generation's lives without a life where they have to use their brain as much as modern people usually does, their IQ wont develop in the way it does for those who do. This is clearly visible in studies about black people in america, who has a lower IQ than white people of the country. These studies even if they are not that topic which comes to your face from everywhere can be found on the internet many places.

And you can also find studies everywhere about nutrition and intelligence, environment and intelligence, cultural bias in IQ tests, etc. My point is merely that intelligence influencers are multivariate (many variables) so it is difficult to point at any one thing.

Gypsies were among the people known as untouchables who were exiled from India long ago. They became indentured servants of the Tur people and peopled the geography known as Turan. The Tur males and Gypsy females had children but the Tur males refused to father the children. Later these Tur people started to be called Indo-European (or Aryan) people and they migrated to Europe and intermingled with the native population there.
That's the basic thing I know about gypsies.

hjernespiser : of course, these things all effects genetics, nutrition is a very important matter. It doesnt mean that it will surely effect your children, we are talking about higher and lower chances for that. Genetics is a very interesting topic we still dont know everything about.

What a bunch of nonsense... I totally agree with you. (seriously) There is also a very weird person who suggests that "aryan" actually means "gypsy" & "someone who doesn't have a country and who will keep looking for one". I disagree with that weird person. I was once told that they live isolated from the rest of the people because they also lived like this when they were in India. Care to give us what you know about them?

Untouchables still livr in India. Gypsies are nomadic herders from west India who migrated to Europe. Rajputs in India are still nomadic. The Irish travellers are desended from the origanal hunter-gatherer population. One conflict that comes up with them is that many of them don't recognise property rights.

I wonder why the Gypsies left India and migrated westwards.
