afaik not windsocks, but the wolf-head is in most cases based on this: steppes.proboards.com/thread/321/turkic-golden-wolf-banneri'm actually curious what the pictoral sources are for many reconstructions of parthians with windsocks/wolf-head banners. i've never seen any actual iranian art that had them. or are they only described in the written sources?

As Baysongor said, those banners are Turkic wolf-banners, a later version of Scythian-Sarmatian draco standarts.

Yeah, I like Gorelik's art but he does make me wonder sometimes. Another thing he does a lot is he portrays Mongols wearing helmets with face masks. Ive never seen this anywhere else. I always assumed face masks were more of a western steppe thing. I think he might have his own ideas.
