Well, that gave some tremendous insight on how warfare was waged in and around the Volga prior and during the Mongol invasion. It's like a well balanced combination of Turkic, Scandinavian, Ugrian and Islamic equipment. Very interesting, thanks.

Quite likely Turkoman chieftains from the Greater Persia region (Qara/Aq Koyunlu, Afsharid, Timurid vassals etc.)

i also question the depiction of the noghay warrior on the last plate from the recent osprey book. according to the text, he's supposed to be an ally from the noghay khanate, which existed in western kazakhstan. however he's been reconstructed with a hat typical for noghay tatars of the crimean khanate in the 18th and 19th century. as far as i know, the noghay tatars onyl lived there and the noghay khanate in western kazakhstan wasn't actually inhabited by nogay tatars.
