Ah those two are different battles At Kalka, the small Mongol raiding army commanded by Sübe'etei Ba'atur and Jebe Noyan crushed a much bigger army of southern Russian principalities and Qypchaqs. At Kulikovo, the combined Russian principalities defeated the Mongols.

Kulikovo is a more complicated stuff that it is generally presented... First of all, there were no Mongols in the army of Mamai. Mamai army consisted largely of Yas and Kassog (Alans and Circassians) mercenaries, groups of western Kypchaks and Genoese mercenaries from Crimea. At the same time, the Russian army at the battle included Tatar units. More importantly, the battle itself was a kind of a part of the Civil war within the Golden Horde that was going on at that time... Russians, basically, considered Mamai as an usurper and a not legitimate claimant to the Golden Horde throne. Actually, Mamai never controlled the Golden Horde except its limited Western part. The Russians, basically, were allied with Chingizid Tokhtamysh who was also fighting against Mamai and defeated him at "the second battle" of Kalka right after the Mamai's army had been defeated by the Russians at the battle of Kulikovo.
So, Kulikovo, was rather like an episode in the Golden Horde civil war where a conglomerate of Caucaisan-Western European mercenaries was defeated by a Russian-Tatar force.

Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it.
But those detailes are often concealed by the "traditional" historiography regarding the battle...
Also, Mamai was allied with Lithuanians but, luckily, for the Russians they didn't get to the site of the battle on time...
Also, interestingly, seems that Mamai's children escaped to Lithuania after Mamai was killed in Crimea.
Looks like Mamai was looking for the allies mainly in Europe and Caucasus, while Tokhtamysh was mostly supported by the Kypchak clans from the Kazakh steppe and Russians...

Hi,I am getting really confused here.In all Bulgarian historical books is written that the Bulgar origin is of Turk-Altay.I know about the Thracians, but i am not shure we come from them really. I prefer to stick to Ihsan Erkoc theory. That we Bulgars are a mixture of Oghuric people from Central Asia,Slavic and Thracians.Don´t forget that when Asparuh came to today´s Bulgarian lands, they were under Vyzantine rule and the Thracians there were almost exterminated. After the Roman conquest there in 1 Century their population was reduced significally. If you want to continue this please come to Bulgars topic.
