You need to ask her the characters. How the Chinese characters look like in her cousins name.
For one "Chun" I can have one hundred different characters and another one hundred characters for "Wei."
Characters ´¾Î¬ don't mean "brave and handsome." You even can check it by yourself in any online Chinese English dictionary.

The actual characters? Hell this would take some time.
Hell I wonder if he even knows how to write it in traditional characters. Unlike my girlfriend, who has a Chinese mum to teach her complete Mandarin, this particular bloke who has an Aussie mum knows ZERO mandarin and is already 100% Aussie. He only knows his birth name is Chun Wei from his birth cert.
Gotta hunt down his dad, give me time to figure this out.

It would be similar with having name Kongzi (Confucius) or Qin Shihuang which is kind of weird for Chinese people. As for transcription vs characters, usually Chinese people themselves don't understand what your name means when you just say to them "My name is Chun Wei." You would have to explain which particular "Chun" is that and which particular "Wei" and what characters are used.

Well it may be a linguistic corruption in between Hokkien dialect and Mandarin, is that possible as well?

Yes, it is very possible as I noted early.
A lot of Taiwanese whose native language is Hokkien, transliterate Pinyin syllabus "Jun" which means "handsome" as "Chun." The thing is that they aren't accustomed to standard Pinyin Mandarin transliteration, so they just write sounds down as "they feel."

Yes indeed, Pinyin is the standart Romanisation system only in the PRC.

Well Bor Chono if one wants power and respect one earns it Heh, personally I still hold to a 'custom' code of conduct I developed during my teens with my Hungarian girlfriend. Heh I was only 16 at that time, she was only 17, but looking back it's quite interesting how kids as young as us could develop such a thing. I've forgotten most of the code unfortunately, only 5 I always remember: - Never show weakness - Never wait for miracles - Never betray trust - Build strength through hardship - Never surrender to weak emotions Forgot the rest heh, ne ways to us, religion means sh-t. If we wanted something, we went for it. Hell we hated religion so bad during those times once my ex read Anton Levay's Satanic Bible on a Church altar lol!!! Just to make 'em squirm. Ne ways if we are non-peaceful in our ways, the last thing we do - is blame our religion. Unfortunately, the majority of religionists justify their acts using "Will of God". That's quite pathetic.
