It was a big sacred area where the Gokturks, Uyghurs and later Mongols used as the main center of their empires. Both Qara Balghasun (also known as Ordu Balyq, capital of the Uyghurs) and Qara Qorum (capital of the Mongols) were built in this area and the famous Orkhon inscriptions of the Gokturks were erected there. However, before the Uyghurs founded Qara Balghasun, there were no cities in the Ötüken region, but as the political center of the Gokturks, there must have been a "tent city" there. Thanks for the fast explanation. I was arguing with another person who assumed that the Goturks erected a city there.

One question: What do you think of Ötüken ? Was it "just" a sacred place for the Turks or maybe even a city ?´
Thanks in advance.

Chinese sources make distinction between heavy and light cavalry of the Gokturks. I have seen some depictions of Uyghurs which mounted armoured Horses in another thread.

heavy cavalry and armored horses is not the same. by definition all mongol horsemen were light cavalry, no matter if they were armored or not. if individual warriors wore armor or not depended on status, wealth and loot. military units were not organized by the amount of armor they wore. Should have used the term Cataphract, sorry about the confusion. But Genghis didn´t grouped his warriors after military Use ?´ I can´t imagine a lightly armed warrior would charge against the enemy or even flank him. Thanks for the fast reply.

Nice photos hjernespiser. fysaga, as far as I know, none of those peoples except the Germanic tribes ever adopted Steppe warfare. Hm,the arabs were mostly Nomads with an style warfare style which was pretty close to Steppe. Also I just wanted an excuse to post some of this awesome pictures. ;D
