What do the Chinese sources say about the first Turks?
I think the first Turks, originating in Mongolia, were most likely predominantly "Mongoloid", with some Indo-European admixture. So, they were probably Turanians to begin with, but heavily "Mongoloid", like modern Kazakhs.
Analysis of 2,000 years old Xiongnu graves in northern Mongolia turned out 89% Eastern mtDNA (maternal lineage) and 11% Western ones. There was for sure some contact with the Scytho-nomads (Indo-Europeans), who reached into the Altais (NW Mongolia) and whose horse ways the Xiongnu adopted.
The Lenins I've seen in China look like Lenin, not Chinese.
1. Before the Turks in Central Asia, there were the Indo-European peoples.
2. Eastern mtDNA started showing up in Central Asia before the arrival of the Turks (probably has to do with the Huns/Xiongnu).
3. The Mongols, even in their own hoards, were always a minority. Their population was really small.
Add everything together, including the fact that Turks originated in Mongolia, where the Huns' bones tested for 89% Eastern mtDNA, (plus the Turks' own statues and the language being Altaic like Mongolic and Tungusic, with affinities with Korean and Japanese) and it is most likely the Turks were predominantly "Mongoloid".
