I've heard these guys were skilled horse archers, however some historians say they are identical with Thracians.

The Getae, or Dacians were Thracians, but there culture was a little different from their southern Thracian cousins. They had more Skythian (and possibly Proto-Slavic) cultural and military influences, to name a few.

In many ways "Getae" was an all-inclusive generic term. Rightfully they should be Dacians, but early Greek writers, and even later ones like Jordanes, have called a lot of unrelated peopes "Getae." Jordanes claimed the Goths were Getae (WRONG!)
And we have Saka tribes far to the east-- the Massagetae and Thesygetae. I would modify the question to address the Dacians. Interesting group of Thracians, but not much nomadic Scythian in their culture.

Hi,well i just got interested in this.Especially after watching the movie Spartacus - Blood and Sand. In some historical researches i read that the Getae and Dacians were same people. In others that they were the ancestors of the Goths or Celts. They are most probably A Dacian tribe with celtic or goth influence. What i do know that they were enemies with the Thracians in many ocasions. The Getae are conquered by the Odrisian kingdom of the Thracians in 3 B.C.What i noticed in the Getae is that they were slightly more savage and wild looking than the Southeast thracian tribes for example. They look very celtic to me or totally Barbarian-all covered with animal leather and rough. The Getae and Dacians were tribes from the same origin and language, but inhabiting a diferent terrytory next one to another on the upper and lower side of the Danube river.I think they belong to the big family of the Thracians.

The portrayal of the Getai in Spartacus was a complete fantasy, the whole "barbarian in furs" thing is nonsense. In fact, a greek writer (whose name eludes me now) called Getai the most noble and honorable of all Thracians.

I'd say rather accurate to our present knowledge. The equipment is largely based on Trajan's column. Romanian archaeology is a bit behind with publishing of their materials in english. I'm doing reconstructions for a romanian archaeologist and it may very well be possible that there's a lot yet to be discovered and seen in terms of accurate Dacian/Getai equipment.
But yes, it's much closer to history than the awful TV series.
(and the movie itself is rather nice actually. I think they used the confrontation of Darius with Scythian emissaries during the Persian campaign to Scythia - in the movie the Dacians send the Roman emperor the same items (arrows, a frog and a mouse) and the emperor guesses what the meaning is wrongly.)

Yeah, that's one of my favorite childhood movies. ;D

Khan Asparuch is a similar one, although I wasn't able to find english subtitles for that one. I kinda understand since I'm Czech, but still. (the equipment is less accurate in that one though, especially the Romans. I like the massive battle scenes .)

Hi,Yes that Movie -Dacii OF 1966 Is similar to Khan Asparuh one. It´s just refered to more ancient date.I know the emperor Trajan I conquered Dacia in 107 A.C. The Trajan Column in Rome is made due to the extremely dificult Roman victory over the Dacians. I must admit the Dacians in the movie Spartacus : Blood and Sand look horible. And i know Dacians form part of the Thracian tribes,so we cannot look at them as something apart from that.
