I've spent 26 years learning to be a swordsman, and about 5 learning to use the bow so my first answer is the saber. However the bow on horseback IMO is the best combination.

Did it take that long? Which types of swords did you use?

Its a continuing study. I'm still learning. I have trained formally in Tenshin ryu Kenjutsu and with sabers as well.

I see, that's nice. Have you used sabers on horseback?
"No weapons" is not an option in the Steppes ;D ;D

Sadly, no. I have not had the opportunity to ride horses. I am working on that, learning sabers and the bow from horseback. I am looking forward to this greatly.

in ther re-enactment fighting I do I have also found that maces are quite effective. Being omni-directional they are less fussy in their use. Devastating in fact.

Yes, no wonder it also became a popular weapon among Turkic warriors starting from the Qarakhanid period.

Personally my favourite weapon is my fists and feet. i would rather have a duel without weapons. Not that i can't use them but becuase my Arab-mixed-mongol ancestry dictates that he who can fight an enemy without weapons in ritual combat is the superior warrior. Also if i can capture an enemy by battering him i can hold him ransom! Being a nomadic tribesman has its advantages, also martial arts were practised by many tribes and nations a soldier without his weapon is ussually powerless. You try to steal my sabre and i'll throttle you! That goes for my own side as well! Basically i can kill enemy soldiers with weapons but what if my drunken brother tries to usurp me after dinner. I can't kill him he's my right hand man on the battlefield he's usefull if i kill him not only will i lose brother but a popular soldier so if i can knock him out with a good right cross to his chin he'll live but he will still learn not to tangle with me. Being a brute has it's advantages both on and off the field of battle! Yes our 3 main manly arts: Archery, Horsemanship, and WRESTLING. It would seem we priced unarmed combat more then sabres and maces lol Still, I trained for about 2 years in swordsmanship with both one and two-handed weapons. I actually favored zweihanders instead of longswords though, mainly because I appreciated the longer grip which allows you to swing it as normal with one hand but also use two hands for a striking blow. The Japanese Katana I actually grew quite fond of as you can use one or both hands, I prefered single-edged blades anyways.

Katana is a fabulous kind of sword. As for horse-riding well I havent found an exprience more pleasing than that. I hope to skill this art of Parthian shooting on horseback one day like my ancestors.
