Maybe because of creating a balance between two super-powers south of them: the Christian Roman (Byzantine) Empire and the Muslim Arabic Caliphate.

Ah yes that is an important detail: the Khazars were Judaist Turks, not original/ethnic Jews.

So your saying the convertion was pure out of political reasons The Khazars are very weird and unique among the Turkic people. They created their empire in Eastern Europe and wanted to maintain their heritage. It was sandwiched between the Christian and Muslim realms, so they converted to Judaism to prevent becoming either of the other two. They were also responsible for saving Europe from falling to the Muslims. There are also claims that most of Ashkenazim Jewry are descended from those Khazars as Koestler suggested. I don't know too much about that but a substantial amount of modern Jews have Khazar ancestry.
