I believe they were an offshoot of the kipchaks. And maybe a mix of some other Turkic peoples of that region like the Khazars.

Russians called them Polovtsians and Germans called them Falben. Both mean "yellow". Am I right?

Russians called them Polovtsians and Germans called them Falben. Both mean "yellow". Am I right? Polovets does not necessarily translate as yellow or blond. There's a theory that the name originates from the word polova which is Russian for "chaff, husks" - seed casings harvested with wheat. The blond or rather wheaty-color comes from this theory. But in many Slavic languages plava stands for blue. There's also a theory that Polovtsy originated from the Russian word pole ( "field"). Russians used to call the Qipchaq steppe - "Wild field" ( Dikoe pole). Most likely Qipchaqs were no blond people. Here's how they are portrayed by the Hungarians who saw Qipchaq settlers of Kotan khan in Hungary: Hungarian King Laszlo fights Cumans Legend of Saint Ladislas (from the Anjou Legendarium)

Both mean "yellow". Am I right? more or less. the word Falben is a very rare and old word, hardly used aymore, it is the name for a certain color of horses, mostly found with Steppe ponies:

The Akhal-Teke is a horse race of the group of the so-called "hot blooded" races.
A pony is a horse smaller than a certain threshhold, about 1,55 m on the shoulders, I'm not sure.
But generally, there is a distinction between pony and horse which leads to some confusion as a pony is only a horse of a smaller race.
Therefore, a pony is NOT called a horse, and a horse is never called a pony.
Why the steppe people in the past used very much ponies, I don't know.
My guess is that they needed less food or grounds to graze. Important factor for an army.
And I doubt that everyone had a pony. The nobles and cataphract riders surely had real horses.

Hi there guys, I don't know if I should start a new thread for this request.. I am part of a team that is making a modification for the game Medieval total war and one of our factions is Qipchaqs.. What I was hoping to get was an idea of what there circumstances were like at 1080... what I mean is who were they at war with, number of warriors, basically a nice little sumary of there state of affairs in 1080... Or a link to more info so that I can make up my own blurb on them.. I am fairly knowledgable with regards to the Empire but know little of the lesser know khanates..
Thanks and sorry for the SP mistakes.

The combined force of all the Cuman hordes at that time was somewhere between 100 to 150 thousand warriors.
