Khan Asparuh - (04) - Speeches
A cut-scene from the Bulgarian movie "Khan Asparuh" (aka "681 - Glory of the khan"), the full Bulgarian version. The Acut-scene from the Bulgarian movie "Khan Asparuh" (aka "681 - Glory ofthe khan"), the full Bulgarian version. The movie was made for the 1981jubilee "1300 years since the creation of Bulgaria". It has absolutelyno computer effects, all the actors are real (around 50 000 extras, tobe concrete)!
The son of Belisarius: What are they doing?
Belisarius: Praying. They're praying for our doom.
Priest: Curse them, Lord! May they no longer desecrate with their foul offerings this land of Christ!
Emperor Constantine IV: So, what do the scouts report?
Gregorian:The fortification of the Bulgarians looks like this, noble one... Itstwo narrow sides sink in the forest, while the further one, the wideside, touches a large marsh-land. The Istros (Danube) is flowing beyondthe marsh and there's no way to reach it through that mire andosier-bed. With one word - when we break their gates, the Bulgarianwouldn't be able to flee towards the river. Their only escape route ishere...
Constantine: I don't know what the marshes are hiding from us.
Gregorian:We know. As dangerous as it was, we had to find out whether there areguards among the reeds. Whole night, noble one, we prowled throughwaters and mire, being on our guard. Nothing.
Constantine: Is it?
Herakleios:It is well known that the Bulgarians fight only on horse. Theirstrength is in the horse, but that's also where their weakness is. Youneed a solid ground to fight mounted, not a marsh-land. While our armycan fight everywhere. That is to say, the Bulgarians have no defencefrom their rear.
Constantine: Let's say so. Whether it is or it'snot, we'll place constant guards near the marshes. Order so! May thearmy form up - I will speak to it!
Belisarius:The descendants of those, who defeated Emperor Constantine in my time, would probably depict him as an inept statesman. But, if I have tospeak by conscience, he was one of the notable men of his age. He wasthe man, who led the empire accross ruinous rebellions and invasions.Clever, impenetrable, composed ruler, who fought in the four directionsof the world. He gained during his long reign a victory, which seemedto us to be impossible. He diverted the Arab conquests fromnorth-eastern to western direction. This is what's called "a decisiveinfluence on history". It gave him a justifiable self-esteem of astrategist.
The emperor: Warriors of the Empireand of Christ! If we are here today, we are not forced by the barbarouspower - it has never been a real threat to Byzantium. Who of us has notfought against barbarians? Who hasn't returned home triumphally afterthe battles with them? But vagrants and thieves have entered our lands, while your sovereign was busy with those rabid dogs, the Arabs, scourgefor our time. But they were finally defeated by you! And so, the timehas come to drive away these new-comers, which have stayed in our ownhome. Where and when was it heard barbarians to be free within theRoman limits?! You will ask: "Why did our emperor take 60 000 menagainst such a miserable foe?" I answer to you: "For an example!" Thepunishment, which we'll enforce on these heathens today, may it be alesson to the whole barbarian world! There should be not a singleliving enemy after the battle! I will not allow anyone from this sideof the Istros not to acknowledge my authority and not to pay metribute. God has chosen you as a weapon for his wrath! With Christ, forward!
Khan Asparuh: People! Today is adecisive day in the fate of our nation. The day, which we'll rememberforever, is rising for us. Our dead and unborn yet Bulgarians will envyat us, because we have survived or perished in this day. You know whatawaits us, if we step back. We are bound to win! There's no other wayfor us..."

Khan Asparuh - (10) - The End
KhanAsparuh: May Tangra bring their spirits to him! No one has ever died insuch a great day for him... This soil from Old Great Bulgaria willremain here forever. The blood of my dead warriors wants it. People, years ago the great khan Kubrat decreed: "The Bulgarians must find anew homeland!" You have fulfilled his last wish. I, khan Asparuh, declare this land a Bulgarian state! And may those, who come after usand bear our name, love it and protect it! I said.
Belisarius:It was the year 6189 since the Creation of the World or 681 since theBirth of Christ. Two months later the emperor of Byzantium signed apeace treaty with the Bulgarians and was obliged to pay them tribute.
Asparuh:After we have a rest tomorrow, our companies will set off, under yourleadership, towards those strongholds where there are still some Romanforces. After tomorrow there shouldn't be a single Romean in the landsof our alliance with the Severi and the Seven Tribes. That is the lawof victory.
Kniaz Slavun: What about us?
Asparuh: You're going with my army, this is clear now.
Slavun: It does not befit my years to kiss your hand, subigi. But I would ...
Asparuh:You, Belisarius, should leave. I know how many things connect you withme. Your whole life. But yet, after our alliance and common victorywith the Slovenes, how should I say, they will become a part of us. Andthe Slavs have suffered heavily under the Romean violence. They won'ttolerate any Roman among them. I don't want to see you stabbed orpoisoned, Belisarius.
Belisarius: Ie, after all that has happened or not, subigi thinks that we should leave.
Ie: Where?
Belisarius:Where I came from twenty years ago. You are my wife, he -- my son. Youshould follow me, because I've taken the care for you in front of God.You wouldn't leave your home without a father and a housekeeper. Wouldyou, Ie?
Ie: Belisarius, my dear, allow us not to come with you! Youlove us, I know, you only want the good for us. But the good for us ishere.
Asparuh: I will miss you, my friend...
Belisarius:Lead me! Now I am the only living witness... The human history hascaused not only countless murders, but also not a little madness beforethe murder...
Belisarius: The rarest human lotis the possibility to choose. And I did so. The first time -- to stayin a world I was thought to despise and hate.
