(Originially posted by me at September 20, 2004) ----
Many people in Turkey think that the Scythians and Saka were Turkic, OTOH the "Westerners" (more correctly, most scholars living outside the Turkic world) claim that they were Iranic.
I also used to think that they were of Turkic stock, but for some years I share the view that they were Iranic. I'm not an expert on them so I didn't do very indept research, except reading parts of Herodotus' History's chapter about them. AFAIS, their culture was closer to other nomadic Iranic peoples such as the Massageths and Sarmatians.
Examples? They had a polytheist religion unlike the Turkic peoples (their religion was very different), they had cults of worshipping sacred swords and throwing swords to lakes, they (sepecially the Saka in Central Asia) were anthropolgicially identical to Soghdians and other Eastern Iranic peoples, etc...
What do you think?

I agree, from what we know today we can be quite sure that they were Iranic...

Sakas were of Iranian origin. In modern Iran (my country ) there is a province called "sistan".Before Islamic era,it had been called "Sakestan" means "the land of Saks". In Parthian era (250 BC-226 AD ),beacause of Hunic invasons of central Asia, original Sakas ( Scythians ) fleed to that region of Iran and from then on,it we have been caling it Sakestan.Sakas in response, helped us to kick Arabs asses out of our country.Yaaghub the founder of Saffarid dynsity, who proclaimed the Persian language as his oficcial language for first time after Arabic ccupation, was from Sistan! Sistanian/Skestanian language, culture, physical apperance is completely Iranian. They are usually tall,dolichocephal,long-headed and hairy.

We mongols call Scythians -Esgii Turgatan=Nomads. Russians call -Eskipi
White Scythians /-Hunas/ are considered as one of the ancestors of Mongols. There is story about 3 khaans of Yellow river. One had white Ger/Yurt/-he was the ancestor.
Maybe Buddizm changed our culture. There is big fat women with very big breasts called Mam/-Mama/ who stoles babies to feed them. Buddist monks call her evil. -She looks like Scythian goddess of fertility.
Also there is women with half face. She is also called evil. -But in ancient time women who is ugly could become witch shaman. if people adopt new religion old gods & goddesses become Evil.
