The instrument is clearly an ʿŪd (Oud), a popular Middle Eastern instrument that spread through the Silk Road as east as the Uyghur Kingdom of Qocho: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oud

tough call. gender is hard to determine, most likely male though, would need to compare to typical depictions of females in this period, if any exist. however i don't believe either bowl depicts armor, as that kind of armor would be a severe hinderance for playing the instrument.
